CHOICE Project Showcases Innovation at IEEE Conference on Games 2024

The CHOICE project is pleased to announce the publication of a research paper related to the gamification approach of the project entitled: “Virtual Climate Activation: A Framework Approach to Sustainable Food Consumption in Games”. The paper was presented by IIASA’s experts at this year’s edition of the IEEE Conference on Games (IEEE CoG), held from August 5th to 8th in Milan, Italy and was published at the Conference proceeding.

IEEE CoG is a prominent forum for researchers and practitioners to explore innovations in and through games. The event provides an essential platform for exchanging ideas that drive advancements in game design, artificial intelligence, education, and their applications in addressing real-world challenges, including climate change and sustainability.

Game-Changing Insights

Jan Steinhauser from the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) presented the paper during a workshop on “Games and Society.” This workshop, which took place on August 6th, focused on the significant role games can play in societal issues. The CHOICE paper, titled “Virtual Climate Activation: A Framework Approach to Sustainable Food Consumption in Games”, explores how video games can be powerful tools for fostering behavioral changes and promoting sustainable consumption practices in the food sector.

By analyzing current climate-focused games and their approaches to engaging players with climate-related content, the paper directly aligns with the CHOICE project’s mission to develop impactful, game-based interventions for climate education and action. The research provides critical insights that inform the development of “Climate Survivors,” a game aimed at raising awareness about sustainable food practices and climate mitigation.

Engaging Experts and proffessionals

Presenting at the IEEE CoG 2024 conference highlights our consortium’s dedication to using innovative strategies to enhance climate communication and deepen the understanding of sustainable consumption. By engaging with a community of experts and professionals at this renowned event, CHOICE aims to exchange knowledge and gather valuable insights, bridging the gap between cutting-edge climate research and impactful public engagement.

The discussions and presentations at IEEE CoG 2024 emphasize the transformative potential of video games in promoting behavioral change. Through this event, CHOICE partners not only expand the network of climate-aware professionals but also contribute to the evolving discourse on climate communication and education, advocating for the seamless integration of sustainability themes into interactive media.
